Success Stories at Manulife Careers

Janis Ying – Assistant Manager, Individual Financial Products – Products Management

A few years back, Janis Ying was still an active and smart student in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, studying hard for her Business Administration in Marketing and Finance degree.  After joining Manulife as Management Trainee, her passion and diligence never stop.  Janis has rotated through different departments, collecting knowledge and experience extensively, and now working with the Product Management team in Individual Financial Products.

So, Janis, why were you interested in the Corporate Management Trainee program in the first place?

“I really researched different MT programs before deciding which ones to proceed.”  Janis has always been a well-planned person.  “There are a couple of good reasons.  Among them, I would highlight the diversity of Manulife’s business which means more learning and career opportunities for MTs.   Besides, Manulife takes care of the all-round development of her people, from professional growth to personal wellness.  All these, of course, come with challenges to be overcome with determination and teamwork!”

“I had participated in and led many challenging assignments and company-wide projects that developed my acumen in the industry and stretched my potentials.”  Janis believes that learning is something omnipresent --- she learns from her mentor, fellow colleagues, business partners, friends … virtually everyone around her.  “Manulife is a place full of talented individuals, sharing and contributing their best to their work.  The valuable insights gained from working closely with management and people around help to build a solid foundation for my future career in management.”

Janis enjoys continual learning and stretches for achievement.  She received the Top Student Award in Asia, from Life Office Management Association (LOMA) in 2009 for her outstanding performance in the Associate, Insurance Agency Administration (AIAA) Program.  A year earlier, in 2008, Janis also was a Customer Service Awardee for her dedication in delivering excellent customer services to internal and external customers.

Janis, what will be your advice in achieving a fulfilling career?

“Expect the unexpected. Possibilities and development opportunities can come at any time and anywhere.  Always be prepared, strive hard and earn as much as you can.“  With a smile, Janis shares this line, “Joining Manulife as a Management Trainee is definitely one of the smart decisions I had made in my career.”
